Singles round-up #1

Modern Faces “Pravda Scrolls/Cynical Brother” (Dirty Love Recordings)

This Scottish five piece are about to release their debut single, the double A-sided “Pravda Scrolls/Cynical Brother”. Boasting a guitar tone that would do The Edge proud, the first track is driven by some pounding drums and highlights the band’s 90’s Manchester guitar band influences.

Track number two features some more wailing guitar and leaves you wanting to hear more. The band has already supported the likes of The Charlatans and Kasabian and is currently recording their debut album.

Sheepy “Glum” (Blang Records)

Liverpool based Sheepy has recorded 13 albums over a 5 year period and, although his quirky and upbeat psychedelic pop rock won’t be to everyone’s taste, there will be a market for it.

“Glum” does tend to get a little repetitive after a short while- I’m not sure I could handle a whole album.

Sheepy are touring as a 3 piece band throughout the spring.

Smirnov “Ice EP” (www.smirnovmusic.com)

Russian born, LA based Ivan Smirnov releases new EP “Ice”. Consisting of 6 tracks, the EP showcases Smirnov quite well- whether it be the American frat rock sound “Ice Orkestra” and “Feeling”, the Robbie Williams like “Give It To The Wind” or the radio friendly “Forest Queen”.

There are times when you can almost compare the vocals to flamboyant pop singer Mika, then there is  a bit of Freddie Mercury in there, and at other times slotting  somewhere between Maroon 5 and My Chemical Romance. Ivan Smirnov has created an act that is clearly aimed at radio and with catchy songs such as those on this EP, there is no reason why the band shouldn’t do well.
