SHINEDOWN – Amaryllis

Roadrunner 2012

Shinedown return with their fourth album and their first since 2008’s ‘Sound Of Madness’. They have also stuck with that album’s producer Rob Cavallo (Meat Loaf/Green Day). I must admit I have missed out on this band previously (bit like fellow new discoveries for me Cold and Theory Of A Deadman) but having read rave reports about them online and by word of mouth was keen to hear this new album.

The hook filled chorus of ‘Adrenaline’ starts the album off in style with its staright ahead metal riffs. This song, along with ‘Enemies’ – loving the guitar riffs and solos on this song – are the heaviest songs on the album, whihc has plenty of musical light and shade to keep the listener coming back for another listen.

The single ‘Bully’ with a crowd chorus works well and will resonate with those who used to hate the school bully, who gets their comeuppance on the song. ‘For My Sake’ has vocalist Brent Smith swooping and soaring showing what a string voice he has.

At times the band remind me of Nickelback, none more so than on ‘Unity’ – just how do the band write so many damn catchy tunes? With its string backing expect to see this one released as single or possibly ‘I’m Not Alright’ which shows the mellower side of Shinedown and again they use strings backing to good effect.

I fully expect this album to make the year end ‘best of’ lists, it will certainly make mine. As the old saying goes ‘all killer, no filler’, enjoy!
