CATTLE DECAPITATION – Monolith Of Inhumanity

With titles like ‘Gristle Licker,’ ‘A Living, Breathing Piece Of Defecating Meat,’ and my personal fav ‘Forced Gender Reassignment,’ I was instantly entranced. Indeed, Cattle Decapitation has quickly found its way into my shortlist of my favorite extreme metal bands.

Their latest for Metal Blade, Monolith Of Inhumanity, is actually the first one I’ve ever listened to. I always avoided them because, based solely on the name, I figured it wouldn’t be something I would like. After listening to this one, I’m going to have to rectify this mistake.

On the surface you have a fairly straight ahead death metal band with aspects of grindcore thrown into the mix. The music on this album is brutal as hell, as one would expect, yet has a good sense of melody for this genre. One thing that caught my ear initially was the unique choral vocals used.

Never heard an extreme metal band utilize this vocal style. Also, another thing the band does that appeals to me are guitar solos. After doing some research on the band, it seems that they’re a ‘message’ band which typically turns me off, but in this case I can give them a pass. I can’t make out what the hell they’re saying anyway so I don’t feel inundated by the message.

Having nearly passed over checking this out, I’m very pleased that I gave it a chance. I’m not sure if this is an album that I would suggest to folks not into this style of music. Monolith Of Inhumanity is definitely a blistering extreme release that fans of this band and this type of music should not miss out on. It is definitely a contender for Album of the Year for me.
