INVIOLATE – Feast of Ashes

At the recent KISS Expo in Atlanta that I was lucky enough to attend, there was a table set up with the band Atlanta based band called Inviolate, where I met the lovely and delightful singer Kadria. She had a video of their first single “Condemned” to watch and hear on a laptop she had setup. Though I wasn’t entirely blown away, I did like it, so I purchased the single she had and signed up for the mailing list, making mention that I write reviews and whatnot. Well, Inviolate’s first album Feast Of Ashes is finally out, so I grabbed me a copy.

Truthfully, the thing that caught my eye was the gimmick of having a singer who was also a belly dancer. Having a gimmick is something that, visually, can draw people into your realm quickly. However, if a band doesn’t have a sound that will back up that gimmick, what’s the point? To a degree, that’s the main issue I have with Inviolate. Obviously, this is a vehicle for Kadria, as she is the singer, songwriter, and whatnot, though she is gracious enough to view it as a band. That sounds a lot more snarky than I intended it to. Kadria is indeed an incredibly kind and generous person, and you can tell that she loves her fans and is completely devoted to making them happy. That’s a rarity in the music business, as it’s typically self-serving. I just mean she’s obviously the reason the fans listen and attend shows. The songs are heavy, with an almost Industrial sound to them. Her voice is strong, but sometimes limiting with its range. Despite the fact that Inviolate are, musically, going in a different direction than the glut of female fronted bands, the music isn’t significantly unique overall, except the moments she brings in cultural influences. Then the music truly comes to life. I found myself lamenting the fact that she didn’t utilize that aspect a bit more.

Probably my biggest beef with Feast Of Ashes is the production. The mix just isn’t right with the vocals almost overpowering the music. I don’t dislike Inviolate’s first album, but I don’t love it as much as I wish I did. With a few tweaks here and there this album could’ve been so much better. Here’s hoping with further experience they’ll get it right because there are certainly good things going on here, just not monumental as one would hope a first release would be.
