Ear Music/Edel 2012 (Double CD) www.tarja-act1.com
Former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen releases her first solo live album (there is also a companion DVD and BluRay releases). I will admit I am not the biggest fan of her voice but freed of her Nightwish constraints Tarja really lets fly and explores more classical and popular music.
Highlights? Has to be the rousing cover of Gary Moore’s ‘Over The Hills’ – possibly better than the original? A show stopping version of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and one of the tow new songs on here, ‘Into The Sun’ has a strong West End musical feel to it. ‘I Walk Alone’ sounds strong (although I still prefer Jorn Lande’s version!). There is even a 80′s flashback with ‘Where Were You Last Night’ (a hit in Sweden for Ankie Bagger) which is cleverly segued into Belinda Carlisle’s ‘Heaven Is A Place On Earth’ and Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’.
This live CD will certainly please her fans and if like me you were never a big lover of Nightwish do try this as it shows Tarja showing off her true colours – epic metal meets pop and classical never sounded so good.
