PLACE CALLED RAGE – S/T

Despite the name not a metal band but a band who formed back in the mid-90′s with the aim of capturing the Long Island sound. The album, recorded back in 1995, now finally gets a full release. The line-up consisted of guitarist Al Pitrelli (Alice Cooper/Megadeth/Asia/Savatage/TSO), vocalist Tommy Farese (Trans Siberian Orchestra/Rondinelli), bassist Danny Miranda (Blue Oyster Cult/Queen feat.Paul Rodgers), and drummer Chuck Bonfonte (Saraya/Joe Lynn Turner). A pretty impressive line-up helped out by Mark Mangold (Touch/Drive, She Said) who co-wrote a couple of songs and plays keys/piano on these songs as well.

The music owes more the classic British rockers of the 70′s like Humble Pie (the Steve Marriot penned ‘Thunderbox’ is covered on the album) and Free plus late 80′s bands like the much missed Dirty White Boy. Nice mix of musical moods from the country rock of ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’, lots of blues rock guitar on ‘What These Eyes Have Seen’ and the power ballad ‘Jenny Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’. Vocalist Tommy Farese has the perfect raspy voice for these songs, bit like Paul Shortino at times.

If you enjoyed albums from the likes of Dirty White Boy, Flesh & Blood and Tattoo Rodeo back in the day and 70′s acts like Humble Pie and Free this will be right up your street.

Place Called Rage is an interesting concept comprising of Al Pitrelli (ex-Savatage, ex-Asia, ex-Megadeth) and vocalist Tommy Farese (TSO).  Four musicians combined forces in 1995 to produce a unique album consisting of what is described as a Long Island, New York sound.

The album was recorded in one week and no time was provided for refining, so most of the album was recorded in one take with a raw feel to it.  Pitrelli provides some fine guitar work, while Farese delivers his vocals in a style that would make Sammy Hagar proud.

There are some good songs here, but nothing memorable – although this one-off project is a great addition to the music historian’s collection.
