Rocket Science (Release date 08.10.22]
Former Eagle (he was sacked by the band back in 2001) releases only his second solo album to date (his first was way back in 1983). This album has some top name musicians including Graham Nash, David Crosby, Styx’s Tommy Shaw and most of Toto.
As you may expect with the musicians involved most of the songs have a West Coast AOR sound but there are some curve balls in the mix. None more so than ‘You Don’t Have Me’ featuring wonderful vocal arrangements and stellar guitar playing. ‘Give My Life’ is a gentle song with a heartfelt lyric.
Don Felder shows his guitar prowess on the rocking ‘Girls In Black’, a cheeky number like ZZ Top meets the Eagles! He doesn’t hold his punches at times like on the song ‘Money’, an attack on the financial woes of many in the US right now.
Felder says in his press notes this album was a chance to ‘write out the stories of my life as songs’ and with song titles including the Eagles vibe on ‘Heal Me’ and ‘Over You’ it can be a very revealing and honest look at his life.
The only downside is that this is only Felder’s second solo album as this one is a fine album and it would be reassuring to know it won’t be another twenty odd years until his next one! From West Coast AOR via neatly crafted pop this is a damn fine album. ****
