LOVERBOY – Rock N Roll Revival

Frontiers

I’ll be honest, I was sceptical of this one, however nothing else has got near my stereo for weeks- “Rock N Roll Revival” is, hands down, one of my favourite albums of 2012. Mixing three new tracks with re- recordings of some of their best loved songs, Loverboy have breathed new life into themselves.

The three new tracks were overseen by legendary producer Bob Rock and recorded at Bryan Adams’ Warehouse Studio in Vancouver and all fit in well alongside the bands more established material. Title track “Rock N Roll Revival”, “Heartbreaker” and “No Tomorrow” all show that the band hasn’t lost their touch in a career of almost 35 years. The re-recordings of the older songs were produced by band guitarist Paul Dean and have given the tracks a modern edge and possible a heavier feel to them, in particular “Working for the Weekend” and “Lovin’ Every Minute Of It”, whilst at the same time retaining that ‘80’s feel.

Vocalist Mike Reno’s voice remains strong, in particular on tracks like “When It’s Over” and “Always On My Mind”, whilst the rest of the band also remain in fine form. It is easy to see the influence that Loverboy have had on the likes of bands such as Bon Jovi and Enuff Z Nuff and this is particularly evident on new track “Heartbreaker”.

There is some great keyboard and guitar interplay from Doug Johnson and Paul Dean respectively on “Lucky Ones” and Ken Sinnaeve’s bass line on “Turn Me Loose” will be stuck in my head for a fair while to come. The album is completed by “Queen of the Broken Hearts”, “The Kid Is Hot Tonight” and an 8 minute run through of “Hot Girls In Love”- the latter sounding like a fine mix of ZZ Top and Huey Lewis and The News.

Loverboy are currently on a massive North American tour, along with Journey and Pat Benetar, that will take them through to the end of the year-and  hopefully they’ll decide to do some European shows too. “Rock N Roll Revival” may not be a groundbreaking new release but for an awful lot of us this kind of nostalgia is a very, very good thing.
