Following on the heels of his last solo album, the wonderful “Crossroads Moment” (and “Extra Moments”) which was mostly co-written with ex-Survivor colleague Jim Peterik, comes “Never Too Late”.
The Survivor writing connection has been severed for this release but the quality of the material on offer is just as good. Who is responsible this time round? Well it’s Erik Martensson of Eclipse and W.E.T. fame. The Scandinavian has pulled out all the stops and written an excellent set of songs for Jimi Jamison to get his pipes around.
Jimi Jamison joined Survivor for the absolutely perfect “Vital Signs” album back in 1984 replacing Dave “The Cap” Bickler and sang on the Rocky song that wasn’t “Eye of the Tiger”- also known as “Burning Heart”! As I’m sure you all know he was also the voice behind the “Babewatch”…sorry “Baywatch” theme. But to be honest Jimi has rarely sounded in better form than on this release – every song just oozes quality.
From opener “Broken Heart” through to closer “Walk On (Wildest Dreams) there is nothing out of place. You’ve got the Survivor-esque songs, the magnificent ballads and the more rocky numbers. “Street Survivor” has a very Survivor-like intro and “Heaven Call Your Name” is pure class. Something for everyone. There is a very 1980’s feel to some of the numbers but the production is spot on.
One thing that bugs me about some of the Frontiers releases however is the poor quality of the album cover artwork and this one is is no exception – come on guys you can do much better than this…
Excellent release from Jimi – highly recommended. ****½
