Soliel Moon is a duo formed by vocalist Larry King (current singer in the Michael Thompson Band and Michael Thompson guests on this album) and keyboardist John Blasucci. This is the band’s second album and it has been released last year in the US in their own label but Frontiers in their wisdom have picked this up for a full release. Good job too as this album is a superb piece of melodic rock/AOR and the vocals of Larry King are simply stunning – if you thought he was good on the Michael Thompson Band album released earlier this year wait until you hear this album!
I can honestly say there is not a duff song on the album and it is hard to pick highlights. The lead track ‘History Repeats Its Pages’ sums the album up, with an emotional lyric and vocal performance, backed by music that ebbs and flows with the song’s mood. ‘Goodnight Irene’ would melt the hearts of the strongest person and Larry King’s vocal performance is again a stand out, dealing as it does with the passing of a child. ‘Freedom’ is an AOR gem and like all the songs on here they cover various aspects of life.
‘Id’ Die For You’ is one of the bonus songs and with added strings becomes a big production number, hints of the West End/Broadway in the song and vocal, impressive stuff. The heaviest song is the instrumental ‘Burn’ which riffs out big time. There is also a good cover of the Beatles song ‘Blackbird’.
This may have a late in the year release but it sails with ease into my albums of the year list and I am sure it will into many others. Many try and produce high quality AOR albums but often fall in the trap of sounding too contrived and cutting ‘n’ pasting music from previous successful bands, not so in the case of Soliel Moon who I am sure will have their copycats in years to come. Off you go and get a copy pronto…
