STRAY CATS – Live at Montreux 1981

Eagle Vision

When the Stray Cats played the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1981 they were young and on a roll, just 6 months after the release of their self-titled debut album and a couple of months short of the release of its follow up “Gonna Ball”- the band had already had a couple of hit singles and their modern take on the rockabilly sound, infused with a touch of punk attitude, was going down well on both sides of the Atlantic.

In a 15 song set that included no less than 3 encores, the band mixed their own material with a handful of covers and the crowd lapped it up. Their recent hit singles “Stray Cat Strut”, “Rock This Town” and “Runaway Boys” sitting nicely alongside the likes of Gene Vincent’s “Double Talking Baby”, “Pretty Pretty Baby”, the 50’s Prom night slow dance like “Important Words and “Be Bop A Lula”- the latter finding the band joined onstage by Dr Feelgood’s Wilko Johnson on guitar. Then we have a rousing rendition of Eddie Cochrane’s “Something Else”- possibly the best version of the song that I have heard to date.

Other highlights here include “Sweet Love On My Mind”, “Rumble In Brighton” and the Clash like “Ubangi Stomp”. The band put in an energetic and well received set and it’s not hard to see how they won so many people over in such a short space of time.
