Album Review: COVERED CALL – Impact

AOR Heaven (Released March 28th)

Been a few  years since Covered Call last raised their heads after an enjoyable debut album released back in 2009 on the now defunct Blistering Records. They have a new vocalist as well and a good addition at that in Goran Edman, along with bassist Andy Loos (Lion’s Share/Glory) joining permanently as well.

They crank out classy hard rock on ‘Hold On’ and ‘Live It Up’, the latter reminded me of 70′s pomp rockers Roadmaster for some reason. ‘Think About Old Times’ is made for radio and the chorus is blissful on the old ears. Goran Edman’s vocals on ‘Last Goodbye’ reminded me a little of Brian Howe and the song has that Howe-era Bad Company feel. The harmony vocals on the chorus are pure ELO, a good thing in my book.

Not sure who plays the Hammond and keys on the album deserves a pat on the back, as they add that extra topping to the music. Bizarrely for a melodic hard rock album there is not a  power ballad in sight!

They have upped their game adding Goran Edman and penning on the whole an album of melodic rock delights. Let’s hope they can get some momentum going with this release and get some live shows under their belts. In the meantime get this on your shopping list pronto.
