Album review: GREAT WHITE – 30 Years…Live From The Sunset Strip

Frontiers www.frontiers.it

It’s hard to believe that Great White are in the middle of celebrating their 30th Anniversary, 30 years that have seen both triumph and tragedy for the band, but still finds them sounding in top form. Recorded at Hollywood’s Key Club last March, this live CD is accompanied by a bonus DVD has just been released and is well worth a listen.

The band was rejuvenated by the addition of vocalist Robert Ilous for last year’s “Elation” album and, whilst vocal comparisons will inevitably be made with former front man Jack Russell, I can confirm that Great White sound as good live now as they always have. With their trademark blues drenched rock n roll, the band tear through 11 songs from their back catalogue and with just 5 of those tracks coming in at under 6 minutes- and even then, only just, there is some great musical interplay here.

From a bombastic “Face The Day”, a slow burning “House of Broken Love“ and to “Mista Bone”, complete with a blues jam intro, there is a good feel of nostalgia going on here. “The Big Goodbye” and “Rock Me” also sound great but it is “Back To The Rhythm”, “Lady Red Light”, the 11 minute “Can’t Shake It” and, of course,  the band’s well know and much loved rendition of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” that not only please the audience, but remind listeners what a great band Great White are.
