Album review: JULIAN LENNON – Everything Changes

JULIAN LENNON - Everything Changes

Music In Another Room [Release date 03.06.13]

When it was originally released in October 2011 in the UK and Ireland, Julian Lennon’s sixth studio album failed to tickle the Top 100, and neither of the singles lifted from it – Lookin’ 4 Luv and Guess It Was Me fared any better.  Those that did indulge seem, however, to almost universally regard it as his finest hour.

A collection of ’14 brand new songs’ Everything Changes is Lennon’s first release in well over a decade, and now well into middle age he sounds more comfortable in his skin than he ever has before.  It’s an accomplished and mature piece of work that acknowledges his Beatles bloodline, without ever being over reliant or derivative.

Beautifully played, packaged and produced, his personal performance is quite masterful and everything the ‘adult orientated rock’ should be – heartfelt vocals, insightful lyrics and some supremely sympathetic accompaniment.

It’s an album that reveals previously uncharted depths on each play, merits ‘end to end’ playing, and one that marks Lennon out as a major talent in his own right.  His Dad would have been proud.  Let’s hope it fares better than when it was first released – you won’t hear a more consummate piece of radio friendly pop/rock this year.  *****
