EP review: JULIA KOSTEROVA – Springs Of Time EP

[Release date 22.04.13] www.juliakosterova.com

Heavyweight assistance in the form of Derek Sherinian and Brian Tichy doesn’t always translate to ‘stellar’ product.

The only novelty here is that Russian-born guitarist Julia Kosterova looks very nice and there aren’t that many female shredders out there and certainly not many brave enough to make an instrumental EP.  She could be the ‘Maria Sharapova of Shred’, but perhaps not yet.

The truth is the songs aren’t memorable and the playing not especially engaging.  Far too much emphasis on the technical and not much soul or – to be honest – a decent guitar tone.

It is evident that these ‘big names’ never pass judgment as they receive their session cheque but someone with experience should have stepped in here to help the girl.

All tracks – especially the standout ‘The Wave Of Luck’ – are saved by Sherinian’s keys and fans of the Planet X School of Frenetic will enjoy.  ***
