THE FIREFLYS – Embers of the Autumn
www.thefireflys.co.uk [Release date 12.08.13]
Third album from this band who hail from Runcorn in Cheshire and they have supported Ocean Colour Scene amongst others, and they have bits of that band in their sound on this album.
Brave move starting things off with a ballad ‘Unplayed Guitar’ and this song, along with another slow song ‘Hummingbird’, reminded me of Paul Weller. The tempo picks up considerably by the second half of the CD as the band get in touch with their Brit rock roots on ‘Hannah Said’, whilst ‘Der Reise’ is a mass of guitar riffs and a catchy chorus.
Stick with this one as not an instant listen and they are a very talented and assured group of musicians. ***1/2

DYNAMITE – Lock ‘N’ Load’
www.recordheaven.net
You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce from the band’s name, the album cover (band posing with TNT) and the song titles (‘Wild Wild Woman’) that this Swedish band love all things AC/DC.
But is their music any good? It is indeed, full of Angus Young approved guitar and vocals similar to the late Bon Scott.’Midnight Blues’ and ‘Work Hard For Your Money’ really do tap that classic 70′s AC/DC sound, albeit not quite matching the lyrics of Bon Scott who lived his tales told through the AC/DC songs.
It’s not original by any stretch of the imagination, however for sing-a-long AC/DC approved anthems Dynamite do it well. ***1/2

ANTO MORRA – Never Had To Shout
www.antomorra.com [Release date 02.09.13]
Anto Morra (real name Anthony Morrissey) is the second cousin of Morrissey and like his more famous relative has a love of punk/indie rock, although he is folkie at heart.
This is a very autobiographical album, from the unaccompanied singing on ‘Ballad Of Anto Morra’ which sets out his lief story to date through to ‘London Irish’ which highlights his cultural identity – his punk side comes out in the lyrics.
I’ll be honest and say he has a typical folk singer’s vocal, it is listenable but lacks anything to really make it stand out. That said this is a fine album and the stories told through song do make the listener think none more so than ‘Wrong Path’.
A shoe in for the festival circuit and folk clubs based on this album and worthy of your time. ***1/2
