Album review: HERETIC’S DREAM – Walk the Time

HERETIC'S DREAM - Walk the Time

Videoradio

Formed in 2010, this Italian band could easily be put in a metal category but on close hearing this is more mainstream, even if a little on the heavy side.  The songs are great but let down by Francesca Di Ventura’s vocals.  She sounds like she’s not sure of her English, therefore may have intentionally been mixed down.  This is a great shame, it might have been easier if she had sung in her native tongue: the melodies are strong enough.

The band certainly know how to mix things up and the pop ballad ‘Believing In You’  – with a flute solo from drummer Maurilio Di Stefano – is far removed from the opening bombast of ‘Outcasted’.  At their best – as on ‘Shockwave’ – they are Delain-lite.  An attractive ballad ‘Fighting Time’ – a duet with Terence Holler (from the band Eldritch) -  is far too wordy.

But, if you can make allowances for the vocal delivery, there is much to like here overall although ultimately not a sustainable listen.  There’s potential, definitely, but the album also lacks in the production department and Andrej Surace’s guitar licks are far too polite, clean and predictable.  I am sure this applies to the band image, too.  They need to dirty things up a bit.  ***1/2
