Gig Review: Y&T – ABC,Glasgow,19 September 2013

I have had a few rants in the past regarding gigs starting unexpectedly early due to venue curfews but tonight was the worst yet. Arriving at the ABC at 7.30pm I was greeted by the sight of the stage crew clearing the stage after tonight’s support band, Night By Night, had completed their set! According to our photographer Iain the band put in a good set, sorry guys hope to catch you next time.
After the crew had earned their cash for the night it was the turn of Y&T to take to the stage. After a quick intro the band strolled on and fired into ‘Mean Streak’ which was an apt opener as this year is the 30th anniversary of the album’s release.
Centre stage, as always, was Dave Meniketti who looks much the same as he did back in the early eighties, a bit older but he is wearing well. His vocals have also stood the test of time well and his guitar work is as impressive as ever.
The setlist was a run through of Y&T’s greatest hits with a couple of tracks from the band’s last album, ‘Facemelter’. It was the classics though that raised the biggest cheers from the decent sized crowd. ‘Black Tiger’, ‘Midnight In Tokyo’ and ‘Lipstick and Leather’, to name but a few, were played with passion by the guys. It is easy to forget how good the band’s back catalogue is, all tracks rock hard and heavy.
Meniketti was clearly enjoying the night and was reminiscing at one point about the band playing the Glasgow Apollo back in 1982 as support to AC/DC, much to the approval of the crowd. One of the set highlights, ‘Winds Of Change’, saw some excellent dual guitar work between Meniketti and John Nymann. It was the opening chords of ‘Summertime Girls’ though that raised the biggest cheer of the night. Dave said that they hadn’t played the song on the last tour and he got grief after every show!
‘I Believe In You’ and ‘I’m Coming Home’ rounded off the main set in style. After a quick chant of ‘Y&T’ from the masses, the guys returned for a great version of the fan favourite ‘Rescue Me’ and things were brought to a close with ‘Forever’ from the Black Tiger album.
So a rocking night with a class act that are growing old disgracefully and which was over by 9.40pm! What more could an old rocker ask for ?
