Quick Plays: BLACK SUCCUBI, KILLER BEE, STUNTMAN MIKE, HELHORSE

BLACK SUCCUBI – Eye Of The Beholder

Gateway Music (Release Date – out now)

These Danish rockers have been together since 2005 and have undergone a number of line-up changes in their time together. This is the band’s second album and it’s not too bad. Straightforward metal is the band’s genre of choice and they make a good fist of things with enough variety and melody to keep things interesting.

What this album doesn’t do though is offer anything new and what you are left with is a decent rock/ metal album and let’s face it, there are hundreds of bands churning those out on a daily basis.

Worth a listen? Yes, but don’t expect any surprises or to remember any of the songs after ten minutes.

KILLER BEE – Evolutionary Children

Mighty Music ( Release date – out now)

Apparently Killer Bee were big in the 90’s releasing three albums and playing festivals across Europe. I appear to have missed their 15 minutes of fame the first time around but the band are back for round two and have thrown ‘Evolutionary Children’ in the ring to take up the fight.

Rock n’ roll with attitude is what the band produce and they make a good fist of things. Opening track ‘ Children Of The Evolution’ is a bit too overblown to be honest and didn’t bode well for the rest of the album.

Things pick up though with ‘A Little Too Old’ and the blues rock of ‘All The Things You Say’ which is a decent rocking ballad. The album is a bit hit and miss, where it hits it is highly entertaining , when they miss though you wonder why you bothered.

To be honest I can’t see this album resurrecting a career for the band 15 years on. A bit of quality control wouldn’t have gone a miss, were all 13 tracks really required guys ?

STUNTMAN MIKE – Triangles

Self Release (Release date – out now)

A bit of Alt rock from Glasgow this time, courtesy of Stuntman Mike. The guys reportedly rehearse within their local football stadium in Airdrie and thankfully the band are better than the team! The band play driving indie rock which reminded me of Placebo at times. I wasn’t expecting too much from this disc, although the actual disc itself is rather cool, resembling a miniature vinyl album, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The band have mastered the art of writing a catchy tune with good choruses throughout and there are a few that stick in your head which is the mark of a good song. It may be more NME than Kerrang! But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t rock as it most certainly does.

If you can see past the indie rock tag then Stuntman Mike are worth checking out.

HELHORSE – Oh Death

Mighty Music ( Release date – out now)

This album has a split personality. It starts off as a good stoner rock album with lots of fat riffs, bombastic drumming and good vocals. This lasts for about four songs, after this the album descends into something approaching hardcore metal complete with screaming vocals and I’m not too sure why.

The stoner incarnation of the band is by far the better of the two and the start of the album is enjoyable but once they flick the switch marked ‘Scream’ it all goes rapidly downhill.

If the band could only decide what they want to be then perhaps they can produce a coherent album, personally I would stick with the stoner rock and let the Helhorse ride off into the sunset with the hardcore vocals.
