What? You haven’t heard of the The Temperance Movement? Have you had your head under a stone for the past few years?
TTM have been taking the music scene by storm and selling out pretty much every venue they play. We’ve seen them pack out the 250 capacity Bodega in Nottingham and tonight they have filled the 900 capacity Academy 2. They could have moved to Academy 1 and still sold out by the amount of positive press they are getting.
So grabbing a support slot with them would bring any band a huge captive audience and they would need to be able to cut the mustard, Brother And Bones are certainly a band that can live up to the task.
We have seen them work a 20,000 capacity crowd at Cropredy Festival and come out winning with their infectious almost tribal drumming, guitar driven folk rock.
Their show is an incredibly energy charged affair which sees guitarists Rich and James build complex and exciting vocal and guitar phrases on to the underlying running rhythms built by the bass and drums of Alex and Yiannis and then the inclusion of a full percussion section from Robin which really sets them apart from other bands.
A hugely entertaining and expressive set that includes my faves ‘To Be Alive’ and ‘I See Red’ and a band that needs to be watched to really understand their style, they will no doubt be compared with other folky rocky bands as there are a number around but these guys are the real deal. Catch them at a small intimate venue while you can before they hit it big.
The venue is crammed now and a buzz of excitement wisps around the room. The Temperance Movement whilst still touring their debut album are working on material for album 2 and tonight we hear a number of new tracks including ‘Battle Lines’, ‘Oh Lorraine’ and ‘Long Run’.
They kick off with ‘Ain’t No Telling’ which sets the crowd going and tbh the whole crowd; old fans and new are just as up for the music as the band who are playing it. ‘Phil’s’ gruff gravely vocals are pretty much on the ball tonight, which is something I can’t say about his dancing and at one point he is doing a fairly good interpretation of the ‘funky chicken’ !
Up next is ‘Smouldering’ a slow moody track featuring some great harmonies from Phil and Luke who also kicks in some great but subtle lead licks. Two more crowd faves give them chance to air their vocals chords and join in with ‘Be Lucky’ and ‘Only Friend’ where Luke and Paul trade some brilliant guitar work.
Next up one of the new tracks ‘Long Run’ which Phil mentions was written in Germany when the band were sick of their songs and sick of each other and just wanted to get home, a thoughtful and moving track showing that the rockstar life isn’t always fun.
The middle section of the set was marred by really bad sound mainly on Phil’s acoustic guitar but seemed to be sorted by the time we roll into the last track of the main set ‘Know For Sure’. To finish off a great evening we get an encore of ‘Pride’ and finally finishing off with a wild version of ‘Midnight Black’.
TTM are still riding the crest of the wave and I can’t see them getting off it anytime soon especially after tonight and seeing the crowd’s reaction. Just awesome.
