Album review: ARTHEMIS – Live From Hell
Off Yer Rocka Recordings (Release date – 25th May 2014)
A couple of years ago I headed to Wales for the annual Hammerfest shindig and one of the discoveries of that weekend were Italian thrashers, Arthemis. The band were on early in the day but put on an entertaining show with a great soundtrack which ended up being one of my highlights of the weekend.
Fast forward to November 2013 and the guys were back in Wales, this time as part of the Hard Rock Hell weekend and also with the tape rolling to record their performance for this release. The album bursts into life with the opening track ‘Scars On Scars’, no intro tracks or niceties here! What you do get though is full on melodic thrash played by a band with a lot of talent.
The guitar work of Andy Martongelli is never less than impressive as are the vocals of frontman Fabio D. Fabio has an enthusiastic stage presence and engages the crowd from early on, encouraging them to join in at every opportunity. ‘Still Awake’ is up next with furious drumming from Kekko and a great chorus.
One of the beauties of Arthemis is that although they play hard and heavy they don’t forget about harmony and melody and are masters at writing a monster chorus to be screamed out at the top of your lungs. Top track for me is the title track from the band’s last studio album, ‘Empire’, which contains a red hot performance from all on stage. ‘Seven Days’ and ‘Vortex’ round off the set, and the album, with a flourish and a well earned cheer from the crowd.
If you have yet to be introduced to Arthemis then this live set would be a good place to start. This album has re-enforced my thoughts on seeing the band that day in Wales. They are a tight, talented thrash band with a bright future ahead of them.
