Album review: IRON KNIGHTS – Iron Knights

Iron Knights

Metalbox Recordings (Release date – Out now)

If you look at Iron Knights’ Facebook page it states ‘ Iron Knights are a heavy metal band – nothing to sidetrack you from the music’ and listening to this self-titled debut I can see what they mean. Metal in its most basic form is what you get here, with heavy riffs and furious drumming being the order of the day.

Over the course of the 11 tracks featured there is a lot to like. The main feature is the guitar work of Jamie Gibson which is excellent throughout with touches of Zakk Wylde and Dimebag Darrel evident in his playing. Gibson also provides the vocals and this, for me, is where there is a weakness as his voice tends to be a bit one dimensional and monotone.

Top tracks for me were ‘Transparent’ which is a strong opening track, ‘Vicious Circle’ with its Pantera like riff and ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ which provides a quieter moment in the proceedings and features Gibson’s strongest vocal performance.

Overall, this is a decent metal album produced by a band with passion and a belief in their music. For me though it does lack variety and the flat vocals are a constant niggle which I can’t overlook. Good then, but not essential.  ***
