Album review: LARKIN POE – Kin

Larkin Poe - Kin

RH Music [Release date 25.08.14]

Having lost all sense of direction on their last release – The Sound Of The Ocean Sound with Thom Hell in 2013 – you wondered whether sisters Rebecca and Megan Poe were destined for obscurity.

Previous outings suggested they could be contenders for the country/crossover crown once worn by The Dixie Chicks, but their output of pop and rock with country/bluegrass undertones was simply too patchy both in direction and content.

After the The Sound Of The Ocean Sound, Kin therefore comes as something of a revelation.  While the Pierce sisters are misfiring with Creation, the penny seems to have finally dropped for the Poes and Kin strikes a rich vein of form that sees them focus squarely on the commercial market.

Without losing sight of their roots, Kin is a pop album, albeit with blues rock and folk/ country influences.  There’s a new playful pop sensibility that reminds on occasions of (whisper it quietly) Bananarama, and ‘Elephant’ wouldn’t be out of place in a Beyoncé set.  But numbers like ‘Jailbreak’, and ‘Sugar High’ are wonderful blues rock crossovers while ‘Crown On Fire’ steals the Pierces own ‘summer of love’ crown.

Packed with radio friendly tunes, Kin is one of the best pop/rock albums you’ll hear this year and easily the girls’ best offering to date.  ****
