Album review: HOUSE OF X – S/t

House of X

Escape Music www.escape-music.com [Released 27.10.14]

Not some dodgy gentleman’s club but a group where three of its members, namely Danny Peyronel (vocals), Clive Edwards (drums) and Laurence Archer (guitars), have all at one time be members of legendary British hard rockers UFO. Rounding out the band is bassist Rocky Newton, who played in MSG who featured Michael Schenker, so part of the UFO family tree then!

The band have toured a lot, starting with a setlist reliant on UFO songs and now they have this debut album that all bar one song, ‘Martian Landscape’ from Danny’s UFO days, are written by the band. The songs are no-nonsense, classic hard rock tunes like opener ‘Do Me Wrong’ or the fast paced ‘No More Tequila’, where Laurence Archer gets to strut his stuff on a tasty solo. The band even employ a little AC/DC riff on ‘Busted’, a cracking little tune.

The bluesy playing on ‘No Way Home’ sounds like a UFO tune, whilst the UFO song on here, ‘Martian Landscape’ does sound a little out of place with the rest of the album with its slow tempo. The six minute instrumental ‘Rage’ again showcases Laurence Archer’s guitar talents, as he trades licks with Danny Peyronel’s keyboards.

Given the pedigree of the musicians involved this was always going to be of a high standard and the songs stand up to repeated plays. Let’s hope House Of X have a long future ahead of them as this is a very good start.
