Album review: WOLFBORNE – In The Beginning…

Wolfborne - In The Beginning

Karvorka Records  [Release date – out now]

This is the debut album from Wolfborne who hail from Vancouver. The premise was ‘to create a record to redefine rock music for the current generation’ an ambitious plan, so have they come close to musical utopia?

There is certainly a lot to like here, the album literally explodes into life with opening track ‘Livin’ The Life’ which launches straight into a heavy riff with no introduction to ease you in. It is a hard hitting, fast paced track with a big chorus which captures your attention and draws you in, the perfect opener then.

‘Out In The Streets’ follows with another fast paced and urgent riff which drives the song on until the last section which takes on a more laid back, trippy air. The first single from the record, ‘Sex Sells’, follows and again it is another polished track with a great melody, not a track to play your grandmother perhaps as there is the odd moan and groan throughout to emphasise the subject matter.

Vocalist Chris Witoski has a strong voice which fits well with the slightly grungy sound, the band are touring with Soil in the UK soon and they should fit in well on the bill. The slower ‘Jellyfish’ is a classy number which shows a depth of talent within the band and proves that it’s not all about full on riffage.

Another track of note is ‘Funky Town’ which has dance vibe to it with electronic flourishes throughout. One thing that strikes you when listen to this album is the different styles contained within. The band aren’t afraid to experiment but it still sounds like a cohesive body of work which holds your interest.

This is an impressive debut from a band with talent to spare. According to reports their energetic live shows are a must see as well. Perhaps not a generation defining album but ‘In The Beginning…’ is a damn fine one from a band with a bright future.  ****
