Gig review: VOODOO VEGAS – Camden Barfly, 4 October 2014

Voodoo Vegas were headlining for the first time at the Barfly and they were worried if many would turn up, well it was pretty rammed and the crowd seemed mostly to be there for the headliners.

I missed the first support but did catch Kolo. They are a three piece who grew on me as their set wore on and bar a so-so cover of the Eurythmics hit ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’, a band to investigate further and keep an eye on. Their drummer looked like the Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins right down to the mass of hair and facial expressions. Liked the single ‘Castro’, a very catchy number and soundwise they sounded a little like the Foos and Feeder.

Singer Lawrence Case of the headliners may only be playing to the Barfly crowd but he has the stage presence and ease to work a crowd that could easily see Voodoo Vegas go far. Obviously stage presence alone isn’t enough and you need a few decent tunes, luckily this band has more than a few!

Be it the frantic, Guns ‘N’ Roses like ‘Bullet’ or the slightly less energetic ‘No More’ (just released as the final single of their debut album ‘The Rise Of Jimmy Silver’). Plenty of fine soloing and heavy riffs from the guitarists Meryl Hamilton and Nick Brown and tonight the band’s sixth member, Steven Green was present on keyboards and tambourine.

Great to hear ‘King Without A Crown’ live – one for AC/DC and Airbourne fans – whilst the band shows their blues rock leanings on a fine version of ‘Ferry Song’. Couple of new songs sounded promising too, one written by bass player Ash Moulton, or as Lawrence called him ‘the brother from another mother’.

The band closed the set with ‘Jimmy Silver’ and what a great showing by the band. They fancy coming back for another headline slot at the Barfly which they certainly deserve and in the meantime try and catch them live as they have a few more UK dates in November time.
