Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra [Release date 06.04.15]
It seems that Pat Travers has been coaxed further on the long and winding road that leads to his now legendary seventies work. Before 2013′s ‘Can Do’ album, in a solo capacity Travers had largely moved away from those heady riff-based rock tunes and was content exploring the bluesier side of his muse. This is fine, but it’s not the music that defined him and established a worldwide audience with albums like ‘Making Magic’ and ‘Putting It Straight’.
‘Retro Rocket’ sits nicely with ‘Can Do’ and hopefully this latest album won’t be considered a one-off. ‘Retro Rocket II’ maybe? We need to thank Cleopatra’s John Lappen for encouraging Pat’s change of tack and the melding of Lappen’s supplied backing tracks with a handful of Travers’ own new compositions that fitted the overall feel. To pad things out they’ve even found an excellent live track ‘Looking Up’, the title of his 1996 album.
From the opening ‘I Always Run’ to ‘Hellbound Train’ the listener will certainly be transported back to headier times and relish a revitalised even if decidedly retro guitarist. Guitar and voice are still in fine fettle and it may even have you reaching for your old Polydor albums or searching out more online. ****
