German rockers Chalice hail from Hamburg and have supported the likes of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep in the past, two bands who have obviously had an influence on the band over the years. Classic rock with big melodies and excellent harmonies are the name of the game here and it’s good to hear the odd Hammond organ flourish throughout the album.
This is the band’s seventh record and it is a polished affair. It contains 12 well constructed classic rock songs which may not be the most original but they are an enjoyable listen. Songs like the title track ‘Overyears Sensation’, a parody on the band’s lack of overnight success and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Machine’ will appeal to a wide audience, Chalice are the kind of band who would go down a storm on a festival bill.
The guys are also well versed in the big ballad and the album contains a few, the best being ‘Sign Of The Times’ which shows off the vocal talents of frontman Gino Naschke who has a strong, sonorous voice which fits well with the classic rock sound.
Top track for me though is the fast paced ‘Shake The Earth’ which wouldn’t be out of place on the Uriah Heep back catalogue. The closing track on the disc is an acoustic led instrumental which features some tasty guitar work from Oliver Scheer and rounds off the album in a chilled out manner.
A good album then but one which I can’t see setting the rock world alight. The 12 songs on offer are entertaining but nothing you can’t hear in clubs and in the lower reaches of festival bills the world over. It may take a few more ‘Overyears’ before the masses are looking to drink from this particular Chalice. ***1/2
