On Sunday 7 June at 22:00 Get Ready to ROCK! Radio presenter David Randall presents his 400th show.
Since June 2007 David has been presenting ‘Assume The Position’ a weekly mix of new and classic rock and signposting current and future tours. He also frequently has interviews with selected artists including this year Jeff Scott Soto, Deborah Bonham, Annie Haslam, Steve Hackett and Alan Parsons.
As David explains ‘Assume The Position’ started as a weekly show on the now defunct UK City Radio. After that station’s demise, the formula gave him the idea to establish a dedicated radio station to complement the popular review-based website getreadytorock.com
“I’d always been interested in radio and for a brief time worked at BBC Radio Birmingham and for a longer spell at Liverpool’s premier hospital radio station in the 1980′s. All this was a great grounding in techniques and programming and the internet later opened up even more possibilities.”
David admits it took several years to get the technical quality consistent and expand the formatting to enable broadcasting 18 hours a day. “One of the encouraging aspects in recent years included very favourable comments from a former BBC Radio network chief regarding the audio quality.”
The station combines presented shows with continuous music programming and he is proud that a small dedicated team has assisted with the output from earliest days. “We have several presenters who have combined roles as a reviewer and broadcaster including Peter Muir, Pete Feenstra and Stuart Hamilton. Others, such as Jamie Field and Alan Jones, regularly sequence some of the continuous music shows.”
The station has also attracted the experienced broadcaster Peter Ross who has worked for several commercial stations including the legendary Radio Luxembourg. Says David, “Peter presents a popular weekly show of classic anthemic pop/rock. We call it our guilty pleasure. But he’s also been instrumental in improving our technical and presentation standards as frankly his professional approach sets a benchmark.”
With regard to his own show, ‘Assume The Position’ is presented live and is a fast-moving throwback to the golden age of rock radio, although the content is very much contemporary.
David continues: “Having been brought up in the era of Smashy and Nicey, inevitably I have been influenced by earlier presentation methods but I hope the listener catches the spirit and enthusiasm for the music in each show.”
In the 400th show, he’ll be playing a key track from each year of broadcasting.
