Quick plays: LOVE/LESS, WES FINCH, LITTLE DEVILS, ANNA LAUBE

LOVE/LESS  Hollow Faith [Release date 22.06.15]

Love/Less are a five piece band from London who have recorded this debut EP. They have recorded a very impressive set of tunes and like they say in the press release, they wanted to capture their various musical influences.  Take opener ‘Misery’ which sounds a little like Linkin Park, whilst ‘Pins And Needles’ with its urgent pop punk riff and shouting chorus could be early My Chemical Romance. ‘Victim’ has some gloriously big riffs and the melodious vocals of Shanksy, whose name sounds more like a footballer’s nickname!

Definitely a band with lots of promise and one to watch.  ****

WES FINCH Awena Unity Roots Productions [Release date 08.06.15]

Wes Finch releases this, his third album, and the title hails from his mother’s Welsh name which means ‘muse’ or ‘inspiration’. He has very soft and at times mournful vocal, have a listen to his cover of ‘Love Me Tender’. The song is stripped down to his vocal and a gentle acoustic backing, the album’s highlight along with ‘Handfast’.

Acoustic and with a quiet, yet prominent voice, Wes Finch is worth a listen. ***

LITTLE DEVILS The Storm Inside

LITTLE DEVILS The Storm Inside Krossborder Records [Release date 01.05.15]

Fourth album from this band and the first with the current line-up, which includes Yoka who has a voice made for the blues. Her range and top notes are nothing short of stunning, plus she adds in a few sax  and flute breaks here and there throughout the album.

The band play a good mix of blues, from the more traditional ‘The Birth Of The Blues’ and the slow burner ‘All About Love’ (featuring tasty guitar solos from Big Ray), through to ‘Wounded’ which could grace daytime radio.

There are a lot of blues bands and artists around at the moment and the Little Devils may just stand out from the crowd due to the vocals of Yoka. Have a listen to a couple of their songs at least as I doubt you will be disappointed.  ***1/2

ANNA LAUBE Anna Laube Ahh…Pockets! [Release date 31.07.15]

The third studio album from traditional Americana singer songwriter Anna Laube took five years to complete.  That is runs out at only 31 minutes would suggest she’s not the most prolific of writers.

But never mind the width, what of the quality?  San Francisco based, the album has an ‘easy listening’ East Coast vibe – the opener Already There evoking memories of Dylan’ Mr Tambourine Man.  But more generally, the album falls squarely into Norah Jones territory.

A pleasant fusion of folk, country, blues and jazz, it’s a polished effort that provides the perfect soundtrack for the ‘cafe culture’ set, and a tasteful backdrop for a freshly ground brew.  ***
