Album review: CUTTING CREW – Add To Favourites

CUTTING CREW - Add To Favourites

www.cuttingcrew.biz

Everyone will know Cutting Crew for their big 80′s hit ‘(I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight’ and they had a decent level of success until they split-up in 1993. The band returned in 2005 with frontman and sole original member Nick Van Eede and released an album, ‘Grinning Souls’ that same year. Fast forward ten years and the band are back with another new offering.

It is worth mentioning from the off don’t go expecting a band trading on their past glories or wallowing in 80′s nostalgia. This version of the band cover many musical bases from the upbeat Spingsteen-like opener ‘Till The Money Run$ Out’ through to some soul on ‘Kept On Lovin’ You’. Heck there is even a nice bit of folk on ‘San Ferian’ that features a beautiful bit of mandolin playing courtesy of Joolz Dunkley. ‘Already Gone’ reminded me a little of Elvis, mainly in the musical arrangement.

There are two real stand outs on this album. First up ‘Looking For A Friend’, a heartfelt song and vocal performance by Nick Van Eede dealing with friends and relatives who leave us too soon. In particular his fellow band member guitarist Kevin MacMichael who died in 2002. The emotion comes through quite clearly on the singing, a brilliant piece of songwriting and performance.

‘Berlin Winter’ recalls the fall of the Berlin Wall and features some lovely sax playing from John Helliwell of Supertramp fame. The musical backdrop on this one makes it special, along with another top notch vocal performance.

A welcome return and an album of wide variety and musical listening pleasure.  ****
