The Fearless Vampire Killers do things their own way and have more novel ideas than most bands put together. They have a very loyal fanbase to support their self-released records, and their own social network The Obsidian Bond – which was designed by guitarist Shane Sumner to provide direct fan to band interaction. Oh and co-singer Laurence Beveridge writes novels.
Having seen them twice I can also confirm they are excellent live and put thought into their stage show and appearance. This six song EP/mini-album is the band leaving their world they have created and used for their previous albums, instead these songs are based on the band’s real life experiences.
‘Aging Love’ is the nearest to a song from their previous material, and the slightly pomp backing reminded me of Elliott Minor (another band I would urge reader’s to check out). ‘Keep Smiling’ I love for its mix of an insanely catchy chorus and the (slightly) screamo vocals in the backing.
Vocalist Laurence Beveridge takes the lead on ‘Stepping Stones’, a song dealing with suicidal thoughts. Despite the lyrical content the band’s trademark harmonies lift the mood of the song. One of the best songs they have done to date and listen out for the guitars midway through, sheer bliss. Not to be outdone Kier Kemp belts it on ‘Feel Alive’, a song for their live shows, with a big drum and guitar sound.
The Fearless Vampire Killers keep on growing in stature both in their songwriting and ideas. Many bands fail on the execution of grandiose ideas, not this band and I’d urge you to try this EP. Their fans will already have this and be eagerly awaiting the next installment from the band. ****
