JOE LYNN TURNER - Street Of Dreams - Boston 1985

Deadline Music/Cleopatra Records [Release date 18.03.16]

Joe Lynn Turner has an interesting early history; before he was hand picked by Ritchie Blackmore for Rainbow, following in the footsteps of Dio and Bonnet in 1980, he’d already clocked up four albums with the under-estimated Fandango.  By 1984 Blackmore had finished Rainbow.   JLT on the other hand was readying his first foray into solo work.  This is celebrated on a rare, live – and contemporaneous – performance from Boston, December 1985.

Turner’s live band is essentially the one featured on  ‘Rescue You’, with one-time Foreigner keys player Al Greenwood taking a major role in their shared songwriting duties and 8 out of 11 tracks featured.  Recording wise it is very acceptable for this era and originates from an FM radio recording, although not without one or two editing blips.

Turner shows himself to be a generous performer, allowing guitarist Bobby Messano three minutes in the spotlight with his intro to ‘Good Girls Gone Bad’.  But, be thankful, it could have been a drum solo.

There’s also a nod to Turner’s former role: versions of  ‘Stone Cold’ and ‘Street Of Dreams’ whilst the playout version of Buddy Miles ‘Them Changes’ gives the chance for the whole band to stretch out and call-and-response to an audience evidently made up of mostly females.  Highlights include an extended version of ‘Get Tough’ and ‘Soul Searcher’.

It would be another 10 years before the next JLT solo album (the reassuringly titled ‘Nothing’s Changed’), in the meantime he busied himself with Yngwie and in the “super-band” Mother’s Army.  This live gem will evoke all the trappings of mid-eighties melodic hard rock: an era characterised by MTV, poodle perms,  guitar shredding, slap bass, and – in this example – great musicianship and memorable songs.  Oh, and of course, wonderful vocals.  ****
