THE CARS Moving In Stereo: The Best Of

THE CARS Moving In Stereo: The Best Of Rhino [Release date 06.05.16]

This best of is released after a recent box set, ‘The Elektra Years 1978-87′ and covers the same period, with one song – ‘Sad Song’ – from the band’s 2011 comeback album ‘Move Like This’. They had a string of hit singles – all included on here – before splitting up in 1988, after the previous year’s album ‘Door To Door’, didn’t match the success of previous albums.

Their early songs are very distinctive for the upfront synths and being one of the bands at the forefront of new wave in the late 70′s/early 80′s. They wrote some monster tunes/hits like ‘Just What I Needed’, ‘My Best Friend’s Girl’ and ‘Let’s Go’, plus ‘Drive’, a song forever associated with Live Aid and the then humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia.

For fans/collectors this collection adds a live version of ‘Everything You Say’ and a single mix of ‘I’m Not The One.’

The Cars are the masters of the short pop rock/power pop tune and although they returned with a new album in 2011 (sadly without Benjamin Orr who passed away in 2000), they have since disappeared from view. Hopefully they will return soon with some new music, until then enjoy this best of.  ****

JENNY GILLESPIE Cure For Dreaming [Release date 13.05.16]

Jenny Gillespie’s new album certainly has some top draw musicians appearing on it including drummer Jay Bellersoe (who played on ‘Raising Sand’ by Robert Planet and Alison Krauss) and guitarist Gerry Leonard, who has worked with David Bowie.

She has  a lovely, wistful voice that draws the listener into her music. It is a mix of gentle pop and folk, from the opener ‘Dhyna By The River’ – gentle folk and you can get lost in the dreamy muisc – through to ‘Last Mystery Train’, the album is one for intent listening and losing yourself into the music. ***1/2
