ROGER ROGER Fairweather
Roger Roger? Two for the price of one? Well, almost as this Canadian folk/roots release features the Rogers twins Lucas and Madeline Roger.
And in many ways it is an album of two parts with the songs being alternated between ‘his and hers’ with Madeline taking credit, and lead vocals on five, and Lucas on four.
Madeline’s are acoustic based her soft vocals very much in the Joni Mitchell/Laurel Canyon vein, with Lucas providing subtle harmony vocals (and sounding like a young James Taylor on the opener ’13 Crow’s).
In contrast Lucas’s songs are more ‘plugged in’ soft rock, perhaps reflecting his earlier years fronting Winnipeg rock & roll outfit Modern Man.
Produced/engineered by Lloyd Peterson (The Wailin’ Jennys) the album has topped Canada’s National Folk/Roots/Blues chart and it’s an easy on the ear debut with some lovely harmonies. But the main strength lies in Madeline’s enchanting writing and singing with the pick of bunch being the enchanting ’13 Crows’, and the wistful ‘O Rainy Day’. ***
