Finland’s masked melodic metal band Lordi, who will forever be widely known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006, follow up 2014’s “Scare Force One” with their 8^th studio release, the split “Monstereophonic – Theaterror vs. Demonarchy”. The Theaterror “side” is the sing-along melodic metal half and the Demonarcy “side” is the much darker horror story of various demons.

Lordi have surprisingly being a going concern since 1992 and had their debut album ready for release in 1999 but this never surfaced due to the failure of their record label at the time. Their full debut “Get Heavy” was finally released in 2002. Mr Lordi (or Tomi Petteri Putaansuu as his mother knows him) is the backbone of Lordi writing or co-writing every song as well as designing and making all of the masks.

Featuring a constant line-up since 2012, joining Mr Lordi on here are Amen on guitars, OX on bass, Hella on keyboards and Mana on drums.

Both halves open with creepy instrumentals, the first of which could be from a slasher movie and the second could be from a Hammer horror film.

Theaterror features the Alice Cooper-like tunes such as amusing, yet extremely catchy Let’s Go slaughter He-Man (I Wanna Be the Beast-Man in the Masters of the Universe), the first single Hug You Hardcore which features a memorable riff pattern that you just can’t get out of your head. Mary Is Dead is the creepy slower number that brings Alice’s Roses on White Lace to mind.

Demonarchy is an altogether different beast featuring more complex, heavier and longer numbers. These are not as catchy as the Theaterror side, but they aren’t supposed to be, but give them time and they reveal a hidden depth. For example, Heaven Sent Hell on Earth is highly complex with many initially disjointed parts but still has the obligatory sing-a-long bits. Mr Lordi does however generally sound as though he has been gargling with acid for the Demonarchy numbers. The epic The Night the Monsters Died brings things to a close with another catchy, at times Alice-like number with extra creepy vocals courtesy of Mr Lordi.

Never imagined that I would enjoy a Lordi album as much as this…give it a try if you dare… ****
