DVD review: IGGY POP – Post Pop Depression Live at The Royal Albert Hall

Do you ever watch a DVD of a gig and think ‘I wish I’d been there’?

Filmed in support of Pop’s recent, and 17th, solo album ‘Post Pop Depression’ and featuring a band comprising of Josh Homme (who co-wrote and produced the album) along with members of The Arctic Monkeys and Queens Of The Stone Age, the gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall is one of the best I have witnessed- and, yes, I wish I had been there.

The stage is a simple set up with the backing band dressed identically- an effective and underused trick. This simple visual appears to make the shirtless Iggy stand out even more and at 69 years of age I hope that I have a fraction of his energy at that age, hell, I hope I have a fraction of that energy by Christmas!!!

The set list is heavy on the newer songs and features no less than eight of the album’s nine tracks. These sit comfortably with the expected Pop classics such as ‘Nightclubbing’, ‘The Passenger’, ‘China Girl’, ‘Lust For Life’, ‘Sister Midnight’ and ‘Funtime’. From the swirling electronic rock of ‘Funtime’, ‘Tonight ‘ and ‘Baby’ to the melancholy ‘German Days’, ‘Mass Production’, ‘Break Into Your Heart’ and ‘Paraguay’, there is a real feel of Berlin era Pop and a notion that David Bowie is still in the room.

The slightly slowed down rendition of ‘Nightclubbing’ is nothing short of stunning and the highlights of this twenty one track show are rounded off by ‘Some Weird Sin’, ‘Gardenia’, ‘Repo Man’ and set closer ‘Success’.

Iggy Pop seems ageless and cannot be compared to any of his peers from any point in his long career. Instead of taking the easier, gentler approach to gigging he is still turning in performances of this calibre- the man is surely the living embodiment of the word legend. *****
