Album review: JACK RUSSELL’S GREAT WHITE – He Saw It Comin’

JACK RUSSELL'S GREAT WHITE - He Saw It Comin'

Frontiers [Release date 27.01.17]

Having really liked Great White’s last album “Elation” I was somewhat wary of hearing former frontman Jack Russell’s version of the band and their new album “He Saw It Comin’”.  I shouldn’t have been – the record finds Russell back in good health, sounding great and clearly over his publicly documented issues.

Now, here’s the thing, the album sounds like Great White should – and that is down to the vocals, obviously. However, there are some really great songs on the album, opening track “Sign Of The Times” literally rolls back the years, “Love Don’t Live Here No More” is bluesy edged and is as good as anything in the band’s vast back catalogue, “She Moves Me” is disco laced in the same way as The Stones’ “Miss You”, whilst “Anything For You” is a Beatle like balled.

There are also two tracks on the album that are almost autobiographical. The first, “My Addiction” is a raw and honest account of Russell’s darker years. The second, and title track, “He Saw It Comin’” could easily be aimed at his former band mates in the other version of Great White.

You could easily imagine David Lee Roth tackling “Crazy” and the highlights on the album are rounded out by “Blame It On The Night” before the album closes with the rather quirky “Godspeed”.

Fans of Great White may be encouraged by “He Saw It Comin’” to now hold out for a reunion of the original band. If that happens, brilliant. If not we have two very good bands here making some very good music – and that is alright by me.  *****
