With six self-produced albums under his belt, Danish singer songwriter Mike Andersen’s latest release Devil Is Back sees him bring in an external producer – drummer Mads Michelsen from Danish band Gnags – and join forces with other songwriters and artists.
The big ‘names’ are perhaps the sweltering cameo duet by Joss Stone on Andersen’s first UK single ‘This Time’, and the appearance of The Muscle Shoals Horns on several numbers. Although the trumpet and sax on ‘This Time’ by Lars Vissing and Kasper Wagner adds a depth seldom repeated.
A cultured fusion of soul, blues, funk, rock and pop, Devil Is Back is perhaps more likely to appeal to Stateside audiences – it’s perhaps a little too polished/refined for us Brits, although anyone who appreciates the finer attributes or artists like Sade, Joss Stone and Simply Red are likely to find much to enjoy here.
Frankly, it’s a faultless set – from the blue eyed of soul of ‘Barbed Wire’, the tugging balladry of ‘(I Will) Give It Up For Your Love’ and ‘Here’s To You’, to the raw sweaty blues of ‘Pretty Fool’ (one that should appeal to David Lee Roth fans). With the right exposure, and a little luck, you could easily see Andersen become a major name across the pond. Classy. ***1/2
