Album review: EDGUY – Monuments

Nuclear Blast [Release date 14.07.17]

Edguy are celebrating their 25th anniversary in style with this 28 song compilation that has an added live CD and DVD. Edguy main man Tobias Sammet never does things by halves and there are five new songs on this album, along with a previously unreleased song dating back to the recording sessions for their 1995 debut album ‘Savage Poetry’. The band have also benefitted from a stable line-up with the current line-up being in place since 1998.

Of the five new songs they are typical Edguy power metal fare and all the better for it! The nice and heavy riffing on ‘Ravenblack’ and the pummelling beat on ‘Landmarks’ are the pick of the new songs.

The previously released songs are a mix of Edguy epics like ‘The Piper Never Dies’, which allows the band to stretch their musical muscles and the more commercial power metal of ‘Superheroes’ and ‘Love Tyger’. Heck, what’s not to like with a band that has a song called ‘Lavatory Love Machine’?! Also included is the great duet with former Helloween singer Michael Kiske (a band that are a big influence on Edguy’s sound) on ‘Judas At The Opera’. On that one Tobias Sammet unleashes his inner Queen and Meat Loaf, OTT metal and then some.

All in all it makes for a pretty impressive package and a perfect introduction to new fans, as well as enticing in the band’s existing fans with the lure of an EP’s worth of new material. ****
