Album review: TIM ARNOLD – I Am For You
TA Music [Release date 01.09.17]
Tim Arnold has had a busy year to date with the ‘Sounds To Pictures’ album earlier this year, a re-issue of the ‘No Coincidence’ album by indie rockers Jocasta, who Arnold was a member of, and now this album of all new songs.
Starting off with ‘Mother’s Intuition’ a recording of the young Tim Arnold (aged 13) being interviewed by his mother and being asked whether he had written any romantic poems or prose. The answer back then was a definite no! Fast forward to now and Tim Arnold has an album here that is full of songs with love as the main lyrical theme.
The first two songs are great pieces of pop rock. First up with a sublime bit of guitar is ‘Love Will Not Hurt’, a song made for radio. Then we have the summery vibe and Beach Boys feel on ‘Anybody’s Guess’ – what a gloriously uplifting tune. The title track is real peon for love and like many other songs on the album features lush strings in the background. The musical backdrop to each song draws the listener in featuring strings, brass and subtle guitar parts.
’365 Days Of Love’ is cheery pop tune, bursting with melody and a cheeky little bit of trombone to drive the melody along. ‘Change’ brings to mind the former 10CC duo Godley & Crème particularly in the plaintive piano and the vocal arrangements.
‘What Love Would Want’ has picked up lost of plays and interest on YouTube and beyond, as it has been used at Amnesty events. It has a strong message about love transcending race and sexual orientation, with the video featuring Stephen Fry and his husband amongst many other couples who are straight, gay, lesbian, transgender, mixed race and interracial.
An album of songs themed in love could easily fall into a mawkish mess, no danger of that here as Tim Arnold keeps things heartfelt, but never overbearing and adds in a little humour as can be heard on ‘Paris’.
This will hopefully be the album to make Tim Arnold a more well known musician as every song on here is melodic pop bliss. ****1/2
