Book review: Some Weird Sin – On Tour with Iggy Pop by Alvin Gibbs

Extradition Publishing [Publication date 25.08.17]

UK Subs bass player Alvin Gibbs and I share a birthday. I was born on his 16th birthday and as I celebrated my own 16th birthday he was playing the last of 230 nights over  6 continents with Iggy Pop and was in Australia in support of the recent “Instinct” album.

Reissuing his “Neighbourhood Threat” book recalling that very tour as “Some Weird Sin”, the book has been updated and fleshed out, with some tales previously off limits now very much back on limits (mainly in part down to the fact that both Pop and Gibbs are no longer marries to the wives involved at the time and so we get an extra dose of sex and drugs here to join the rock n roll), fans will no doubt be happy as for the last few years purchasing a copy of the original book was a case of Ebaylight robbery!!

You’re gonna have to trust me when I tell you how much of an enjoyable read this book is as I do not want to give too much away here. That said, I can tell you that within its pages you will find stories that involve the likes of Guns n Roses, David Bowie and various members of Hanoi Rocks. In fact, the whole reason Gibbs was there was down to a phone call from ex-Hanoi guitarist Andy McCoy asking him to consider joining the band.

There is also an updated section covering what the books various band members went on to do after the tour finished and this was great for me as I already had more than a passing interest in most of these bands.

To summarise, “Some Weird Sin“is well written, easy to read and hard to put down.
