Album review: LAURENCE JUBER – LJ Can’t Stop Playing The Beatles!

LAURENCE JUBER - LJ Can't Stop Playing The Beatles!

Hologram Recordings [Release date 06.10.17]

We can forgive Laurence Juber for showboating with a clutch of Beatles instrumental albums.  He was at least Paul McCartney’s sideman for a time in Wings (1978-80) and worked with George and Ringo.

This is the third in a series that started in 2000 with ‘LJ Plays The Beatles’ and features attractive acoustic arrangements of Fab Four ditties.

This time round we get a fair cross-section of tunes with no one Beatles album dominating.  So we get ‘She Loves You’ and ‘Day Tripper’ mixed in with ‘Hey Bulldog’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Down’.  And, before you ask, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ appeared on Volume 1.

Juber is an ace sessionist but has also studied the lute and his approach to the acoustic stylings is very pure whilst his fingerstyle technique exemplary.  This is particularly evident on ‘If I Needed Someone’ from ‘Rubber Soul’.

It’s all very well executed (and recorded) with production by Juber’s wife, Hope.  Acoustic guitar lovers will lap it up and, if a set of Beatles instrumentals is hardly of earth-shattering novelty, in the hands of LJ it demands renewed attention.  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  ****
