Frontiers [Release date 10.11.17]
Second album from Sweet & Lynch – Michael Sweet and George Lynch – who have both been busy with their respective bands Stryper and Lynch Mob. In fact the ever busy Lynch has recently announced he is part of a new band Super Stroke, featuring the classic Dokken line-up minus Mr Dokken. They have the same rhythm section on this album, namely the experienced duo of bassist James Lamenzo and drummer Brian Tichy, who both previously played together in Pride & Glory.
Michael Sweet reminds us on the opening song ‘Promised Land’ what a soaring and high octave singing voice he has. He can sure hit those high notes and then some. ‘Walk’ uses those Stryper choral like backing vocals to great effect (Robbie LaBlanc is amongst the backing vocalists). George Lynch lays down a bluesy riff on ‘Tried & True’, his playing a delight on the ears throughout the album.
The albums title is a reference to the divided world we currently live in and the fact that the power of music is one things that brings people together. The title certainly does that mixing Lynch’s guitar and keys to good effect and a song that has a strong hook (almost Beatles like at times) that will appeal to many.
In amongst the hard rocking there is a moment of calm on ‘Bridge Of Broken Lies’, although Sweet & Lynch seem to shine more on the rockier sound of their music.
Sweet & Lynch work well together and this album will appeal to Dokken and Stryper fans, along with those who love a bit of classy hard rock. ***1/2
