EP review: INDIA ELECTRIC CO. – Seven Sisters

The talented duo that is the India Electric Co. are back with their second EP in a trilogy loosely based on contrasting town and country. Cole Stacey provides his haunting vocals, along with percussion, whilst Joseph O’Keefe adds his heartfelt and show stopping fiddle playing, as well as providing accordion, piano, guitar and more percussion.

The duo cleverly take folk songs as the base for their own lyrical take and musical arrangements. The only traditional arranged songs on here are the instrumentals that make up the eight minutes plus medley that includes the wonderful fiddle/piano on ‘Peacock Follow The Hen’. This is the most traditional English/Scottish folk territory that the India Electric Co. have ventured in to date on these EPs.

‘Flash Company’ has been done by many artists including the much missed Bellowhead and the India Electric Co. do slower, ballad take with just piano, violin and vocal. Simply stunning, this is how folk can be rejigged and made fresh for a new generation.

Their first EP in this trilogy scored 41/2 stars, same again this time as they successfully meld old folk songs and lyrics into a modern sound/mix that has appeal to a younger audience, whilst retaining enough of the traditional sounds to keep the hard core folkies on board. ****1/2
