Inside Out [Release date 02.02.18]
Germany’s Long Distance Calling – guitarists David Jordan and Florian Füntmann, bassist Jan Hoffman and drummer Janosch Rathmer – have been around since 2006 and although their last album featured guest vocalists, on this album they have reverted back to their instrumental roots. As the band themselves stated in their press release, “This is probably the purest Long Distance Calling album ever – no guests, no vocals and all instrumental.”
Long Distance Calling create wondrous sounds, be it the Porcupine Tree-like ‘Like A Rive’ or the heavy riffing beast that is ‘Ascending’. ‘The Far Side’ brings to mind Pink Floyd, mainly on the opening guitar playing/effects.
On each song they highlight their musical skills and ear for a decent melody, no one band member dominates the sound and they weave their respective playing together seamlessly. Like the Fierce & the Dead, Long Distance Calling are shifting their sounds across many musical boundaries and not allowing themselves to be hemmed in by the musical restraints of a particular genre.
‘In The Clouds’ has a heavy guitar presence, along with subtle percussion and a catchy synth beat/loop. The whole song has an absorbing sound and atmosphere, wonderful listening.
If you enjoy instrumental music with an edge, coupled with a distinct progressive feel, ‘Boundless’ will be a delight to your ears and listening pleasure. ****
