Interview (10 Questions): JUNKYARD

Junkyard have been around since 1987, they originally split-up in 1992 returning in 2000 and their latest album ‘High Water’, was released last year. Here we catch-up with drummer Patrick Muzingo and guitarists Tim Mosher and Jimmy James where they are currently in the midst of a UK tour...

Your last album, “High Water” came out last year and the band has had a real resurgence in the last couple of years, were you surprised how well you were received on your return?

We we’re extremely excited at how well received the release was the day it came out. It had been 26 years between “Sixes, Sevens and Nines” and “High Water” so David had a lot to get off his chest lyrically. Also the music had changed, but not too much since Junkyard really has a signature sound that we can’t get away from. Honestly not having a major label breathing down our neck was helpful and we finally got the chance to get back to our roots.

If you had to sell me the album in five words, what would they be?

A great rock record!

Junkyard is one of the most fan focused bands I’ve come across in recent years and there is a lot of interaction, can you tell us how important this is to the band?

Without the fans where would be any band be? Also we don’t consider ourselves to be “above” the fans. We are fans ourselves, well not of ourselves haha. It’s a blast to engage with our crowd cause you get a lot of feedback (and a few free adult beverages). Our fans are no different then us and that’s why we love hanging and interacting with them.

You’ve been around for over thirty years now, what have been the highlights and low-points of your career so far?

The highlights have outweighed the low points for sure. Our live shows are always a high point, even going way back to before we got signed to Geffen. Probably a good high point would be when “High Water” came out and how the fans and critics received it. Of course after 30 years there are some low points but when it comes to those we tend to not let it get under our skin.

What have been your most memorable live shows for you and why?

M3 in 2017 was a great show. Also our recent show in Minneapolis was cool. The Underworld (in 2017) was amazing. It was the 1st time we played London as a headliner and the crowd went ballistic. After 30 years a lot of shows tend to blur into each other and honestly each show is always a memorable experience.

If you could land your perfect tour tomorrow, what other bands would be on the bill?

Blackberry Smoke, GnR, Rose Tattoo, Turbonegro and the list goes on and on!

You’ve visited the UK a couple of times recently, how do the venues and audiences differ from the US?

Not drastically but we are touched more by the UK crowds who come out in droves cause they think we may not be back…but guess what, we’re back!

How do you view the current music scene? Have you seen a regaining of ground for rock and metal over the last couple of years?

In Europe for sure, in the US not so much but there are still hardcore pockets where “the rock” is still big. As far as venues goes it back to the same clubs we started at.

What is the plan for Junkyard in the next five years?

Hard to say for the next 5 years but for the next few years a new record and more touring.

Finally, you are currently touring the UK with Blackberry Smoke, what can we expect from these shows?

Our 1st show with BBS is tonight in Newcastle. From us you can expect the same Junkyard you would see in a small club. We aren’t the type of band that alters our performance depending on who or where we play. Simply put, we are Junkyard.
