King Calaway formed last year, released an EP earlier this year and now are set to unleash their debut album ‘Rivers’. I will admit this is not your standard GRTR! fare, however good songs are just that regardless of genre. King Calaway will be marketed down the boy band route, however they are talented musicians with three sharing lead vocals (Jordan, Chad and Simon), whilst the three remaining band members (Chris, Caleb and Austin) adding multi-part harmonies. Plus they perform much of the music.
‘No Matter What’ and the title track are big production, up tempo pop rock tunes along the lines of Coldplay or Imagine Dragons (less the programming). Both would make daytime airplay on the likes of BBC Radio 2. Proper uplifting, feel good tunes. ‘Driver’s Seat’ is a great piece of country pop rock, whilst ‘I Do’ is another ballad and features a lovely bit of blues guitar.
King Calaway do those heartfelt ballads with ease as ‘Missing You’ ably demonstrates. Like all of the songs on here they use their collective vocal talents to great effect. None more so than on their version of the Stephen Stills classic ‘Love The One You’re With’. Liking the guitar and vocals arrangements on this one.
King Calaway have the songs to make a big impact based on the current popularity of all things country, plus being six photogenic young lads won’t hinder their cause either. Get past any reservations you may have over the boyband tag as King Calaway will be enjoyed anyone who enjoys memorable and melodic country flavoured pop/rock. ****
