Album review: NEWMAN – Ignition
AOR Heaven [Release date 27.03.20]
Steve Newman formed the band Newman way back in 1997, with the last Newman album ‘Aerial’ released in 2017. Since then he’s been busy writing songs with the likes of Toby Hitchcock, joined the band Burn who released the excellent ‘Ice Age’ at the end of 2017, plus playing a few live shows supporting Terry Brock amongst others.
The opening duo of ‘End Of The Road’ and ‘Chasing Midnight’ are prime examples of what to expect on a Newman album – riff driven melodic rock, with a sprinkling of keys. But just when you think it is business as usual, the title track appears, a neat diversion with its electronica/keys to the fore. Newman funking it up if you will.
Those after some classy AOR ‘Welcome To The Rush’ fits the bill, as does ‘Promise Me’ – marvel at the riffs, vocals and keys, plus an earworm of a chorus.
Steve Newman is one of the most consistent artists in the melodic rock world, always producing albums chock full of glorious melodies and memorable songs. This time around he has added a few musical twists, to help keep the Newman sound fresh. ‘Ignition’ is one of his best to date, pure melodic rock bliss – jump on in! ****
