Songprint Records [Release date 03.04.20]
‘All Is Not Forgotten’ is the fourth solo album from Scottish folk singer Siobhan Miller, three times winner of MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards and a 2018 BBC Folk Awards recipient. Miller is backed by Lau’s guitarist Kris Drever, Miller’s husband and musician/producer Euan Burton, while Braebach’s Megan Henderson plays fiddle, Innes White (acoustic guitar), John Lowrie (piano) and on backing vocals is Kim Carnie.
The original songs are a usually a three way effort between Miller, Burton and Drever. Of these the title track stand out, highlighting both the smoothly melodic singing of Siobhan Miller and the traditional folk backing, which is subtly done and nothing too raucous! That is left to the album closer ‘Cholesterol’, with many a great line including –
“Well semi-skimmed milk may diminish my bulk,
But I’ll take double cream till I die”
Of the traditional songs, ‘Selkie’ is wonderful song to lose yourself in, both vocally and in the musical arrangements. ‘Tranent’ is great fun, sung at a galloping pace and with many a tongue twister, it is the sort of song made for singing live with the audience joining in.
Folk comes in many guises and Siobhan Miller will appeal to those who enjoy the quieter, reflective side. ***1/2
